5 Common Myths about Weight Loss

Farmers-Market-foods5 Myths that Keep You from Natural Weight Loss

There is so much information on how to lose weight on the Internet but if you want a lose weight naturally and fast in a way that doesn’t require fad dieting, drugs or surgery, then take a look at these five common myths that may be keeping your weight loss goals.

Myth #1 Don’t eat fat

WRONG!  If you want to lose weight, eat fat.

The fatty acids in healthy, mono- and poly- unsaturated fats are the building blocks for the hormones that tell your body to STOP EATING.

Yes, fats give your body a signal to stop shoving down food so you can naturally lose weight by getting the signal to put down the fork and step aside from the all-you-can eat buffet table.

Myth #2 All calories are created equal; just burn more than you consume

Most nutritionists advise their clients to keep track of their calories and consume less of them if they want to lose weight. Yes, you have to reduce calories to lose weight but even more importantly, you have to consume the right kind of calories if you want permanent and natural weight loss.

Unhealthy proteins, carbs and fats can actually cause you to gain weight even if you are on a calorie restrictive diet.

For optimal natural weight loss, you want to choose the healthiest proteins, carbs and fats that you can afford to buy.

Healthy proteins include: organic or grass-fed lean meats, egg whites or fish and for us vegetarians organic soy, tempeh or seitan.

Healthy carbs include: low glycemic carbs. Those are carbs that, when broken down, enter the bloodstream more slowly than higher glycemic carbs, keeping your blood sugar levels stable. Stay away from white bread, white rice and white sugar.

And healthy fats include those mono and poly unsatured fats like olive oil, fish oil, seeds and nuts that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, which are components the hormones that signal when to stop eating.

Myth #3 Sleep more, weigh more

A relatively new British study shows that women who get adequate amounts of sleep lose 55% more fat than those who are sleep-deprived and eat up to 300 calories less than their tired and cranky counterparts.

Sleep deprivation causes your stress hormone levels to go up. Stress hormones tell your body to store fat.

The average person needs 7-8 hours of sleep each night. It’s not just important for mental sharpness but your body needs renewal time to keep you at your ideal weight.

Myth #4 Don’t drink alcohol; empty calories make you fat

I don’t recommend taking on the habit of drinking of alcohol on a regular basis is if you are currently not a drinker, especially since water will do you loads more good than alcohol ever will, but let’s consider the benefits and then you can decide for yourself if you want to add a small glass of wine with that next meal.

According to some new and interesting studies, alcohol may actually increase your metabolism by  improving insulin sensitivity. Scientists aren’t really sure how alcohol does this but it may be reasonable to assume that moderate alcohol consumption might actually help you lose weight!

Some people think the benefit only lies in red wine but that’s not true. Actually, the studies show that ANY type of alcohol in moderate amounts can do the trick.

Myth #5 The more I exercise, the more I lose

Honestly, you don’t need to be a Navy Seal to be in great shape. All it takes is a little intense movement a few times a week to keep fit.

In fact, too much exercise causes stress on the body that can actually promote weight gain!

Most people who are overweight feel they need to workout harder and more often but this can actually lead to weight gain.

If you add a lot of strenuous exercise into the routine of an already stressed mental or emotional life, the result is an increase in stress hormones. As the stress hormone levels increase, there is a greater tendency to store fat in the belly.

So don’t overdo it!
