Step 1

Replace processed grains with whole grains.

If you want to lose weight naturally and fast, you have to get rid of the highly processed “fake” grains and replace them with natural, whole grains (or gluten-free whole grains if you are allergic to gluten).

Thousands of years ago, there was no such thing as Wonder Bread, cinnamon raisin bagels, or Honey Nut Cheerios. Through chemical processing we took perfectly good food and turned it into “food-like” products that we commonly find in most grocery stores, what I like to call “fake” grains.

So how does this affect your weight?

These food-like products (which may have started out as whole grains) were stripped of their natural and nutritive components, one of the most important of which is, FIBER. (See my upcoming post on “How Fiber Triggers your Fat-Burning Hormones”)

Fiber acts to slow the breakdown of carbohydrates and the transfer of sugar to your cells. When you strip fiber from grains, you speed up the rate at which those carbs enter your blood stream as sugar.

The measure of how quickly a particular carbohydrate affects your blood sugar level is called its glycemic index.

The higher its glycemic index, the more likely your body will store fat. Unfortunately, your cells can only process a certain amount of sugar; any excess turns to fat.

Highly processed grains = high glycemic index = STORED FAT.

Fiber is just one of the many nutrient-rich and slenderizing components that have been stripped from modern food but fortunately, with the increasing popularity of local and organic whole food markets, it is becoming easier and easier to substitute the nutrient poor fake grains for real, live whole grains that will not only fill you up but keep you lean and healthy.

Lay off the processed grains and add in some whole grains like quinoa, rye, buckwheat, etc.. See what happens! You’ll be amazed.

Now for those of you who are allergic to gluten (a plant protein found in wheat, and other cereal grains, that cause digestive problems such as celiac disease ), these grains are gluten-free:

  • Brown Rice
  • Buckwheat
  • Amaranth
  • Cornmeal (Polenta)
  • Millet
  • Quinoa
  • Wild Rice

or you can buy gluten-free brands, including Bob’s Red Mill, Arrowhead Mills, Glutino, Silly Yak, Udi, Van’s and Ener-g Breads.
